Start Showing up for Yourself!

We’ve heard the phrase “under promise, over deliver” to clients many times! Why do we typically not practice this in our personal lives as well?

I understand the importance of commitment when it comes to caring for our mind and bodies. Self care is extremely critical to our everyday well being.

I also understand that some days do really SUCK. There are days where you truly feel like you can’t give it your all and that’s ok. As this generation has taught us, it’s ok to not always be ok.

It is important however to set a plan for yourself and give whatever effort you have. It may only be 50% or even 20% but regardless you tried and showed up for yourself.

This week I listened to Jay Shetty’s On Purpose podcast, a lot. Highly recommend by the way! Liz Plosser, Women’s Health editor shared a very interesting concept called the 4-minute rule.

Science suggests that it takes four minutes for your body to acclimate to a workout, so I tell myself I can bail if I’m still not feeling it after four minutes—and I have never bailed!

Think about the progress you could make by setting a baseline goal (under promise yourself) and consistently surpass it (over deliver).

This would allow you to give yourself grace actually enjoy the process. This four minute rule also proves that once we are in workout mode, there is magic that happens within that keeps us going. After the workout, it’s worth the battle that occurred in your mind to get you to show up for yourself.

In running, we can often get fixated on reaching a certain mileage or personal record.

What if we challenged ourself to simply run X times a week and set a minimum time vs a minimum distance. There’s a good chance you will surpass your minimum expectations but there’s no guilt weighing you down on days you don’t make it as far. On my normal morning runs, I usually don’t track my time anymore. I used to get so competitive over it and why should it matter if you’re not in a season of intense training?

The most important thing is showing up for yourself!

Just get out there and run whatever distance and speed your heart desires!
